Ok, it has taken me a few days to collect my thoughts and be able to write about this. What might "this" be? Well, I live in the southern part of the United States and it is common for just outside the central area of towns for there to be "country" areas. "Country" being spots where people can purchase acreage but still be inside the city limits. Sadly, it is also common for people who do not want, can no longer feed or care for their pets to take them to these areas and dump them.
On Sunday, December 19th I saw one such dog that had been abandoned. He was a beautiful dog (possibly a Harlequin Great Dane or Dalmatian mix) about a year old. He was trying to find food. Unfortunately he found some food, something that had been run over. He was trying to grab it out of the road when a truck hit him. The person driving the truck didn't stop, he/she didn't even break!! I ran into the road and scooped the wounded dog into my arms so he would not be hit again. He died in my arms. I still cry when I think about this. I can't understand why or how a person could abandon an animal. I can't understand why the person that hit this beautiful dog didn't stop.
It makes me very sad that things like this happen all the time. I ask that all who read this be responsible with their pets. Pass it on to those you know and love so they act responsibly as well. If you cannot afford or give love to more animals than you currently have then please spay or neuter your existing pets. If you have animals you can no longer care for please contact a shelter in your area or The Humane Society of the United States.
For a list of Organizations that I found on Yahoo please see Humane and Rescue Societies.
